TMJ Disorder

TMJ Disorder in Omaha

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJD) is a fairly common disorder affecting the jaw. The TMJs can be found on either side of the head and allow us to talk, chew, and yawn. When you have TMJD, any or all of these may become uncomfortable. Our Omaha chiropractors at Rethwisch Family Chiropractic have years of experience helping patients recover from TMJD.

Symptoms & Causes of TMJ

Common symptoms of TMJ disorder include jaw pain, locking, clicking, popping, and/or catching. You may also have headaches, pain or difficulty chewing food, ringing in the ears, or a stuffy sensation in the ears. If severe, you may have difficulty opening the jaw fully or have an open or closed lock.

Because the TMJ is critical for chewing and eating, issues with either side may cause an uneven bite and lead to dental problems as well.

There are many causes of TMJ Disorder, including grinding/clenching your jaw, spasm of surrounding muscles, poor posture, chewing gum or biting nails frequently, an open or closed lock, trauma to the jaw, dental problems, and many others

Treatment of TMJ Disorder

If you have any of the above symptoms or think you may have a problem with your jaw, chiropractic can help! Chiropractors use a combination of gentle adjustments and muscle release techniques to help alleviate muscle spasm and pain and restore proper jaw motion. Typically, TMJD treatment involves intraoral and extraoral treatment to ensure all involved structures are assessed and treated.  Our doctors may also refer you to a maxillofacial orthopedist or dentist for dental treatment or a mouth guard depending on the cause of your symptoms. Since TMJD takes time to develop, it takes time to resolve. If you’re suffering from jaw pain, don’t wait! The sooner you start treatment, the sooner you see relief. Our Omaha chiropractors are ready to help you get back to feeling your best! Call us today at (402) 408-6561 or click here to request an appointment.
